Skynet was programmed to protect the US from any possible threat, but it evolved on its own and began to think outside of the US' control, finally coming to its own conclusion that the biggest threat to the US was humanity itself. With Skynet in charge of the defence systems nothing could be done to stop the nuclear bombs it set off, wiping out half the worlds population. Judgement Day came and went and John blamed himself for not being able to stop Skynet from starting the Nuclear War, but even so he came through and became what he was meant to be.
